2. Understanding the genetic basis of AMD has impor-
tant implications for the ophthalmologists as it allows the
identification of the biochemical pathway for a large pro-
portion of AMD patients, raises the possibility to perform
pre-symptomatic diagnostic testing of risk genotypes and
to stratify the response to therapy based on genetic risks
and supports the development of new therapies being the
inhibition of complement a potential one among others
that are already being tested.
